The short answer

Octoque auto-publishes text posts, posts with up to 4 photos, posts with one video and threads of up to 10 posts to Bluesky. Each post can be 300 characters,[2] with alt text on every photo.

You connect with a Bluesky app password: a separate password you make for one app and can revoke any time.[1] Octoque passes it straight to Bluesky to connect and never stores it. Comments and DMs from Bluesky show in Octoque’s inbox.

What you can post on Bluesky with Octoque

Everything marked Auto-publish goes out on its own at the time you set. You get a notification when it’s live, or a plain explanation if Bluesky turned it down.

Bluesky’s limits, and Octoque’s

Bluesky’s own rules are linked from the sections above and in the sources at the end of this page.

What Octoque itself allows on Bluesky today:

  • Captions up to 300 characters, with a live counter under the caption.
  • Octoque sets no video length of its own here: Bluesky’s own limit applies.
  • Up to 4 photos, or one video. Files: MP4, MOV, JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 1 GB.

How Octoque handles Bluesky

An app password, never stored

Make an app password in Bluesky (Settings, then Privacy and security, then App passwords), and enter it with your handle. App passwords look like xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx and can’t change your account’s settings.[1] Octoque uses it once to connect and never keeps it.

The tightest limit after X

Bluesky allows 300 characters.[2] Write a Bluesky version in its own tab, or turn a long caption into a thread that also goes to X and Threads.

Comments and DMs

Replies to your Bluesky posts and your Bluesky DMs show in Octoque’s inbox, read live and never stored. DM replies are text only.

Midday by default

Bluesky starts at noon in your audience’s time zone. Once your posts have results, your own best hour takes over.

When it posts: 12 pm, then your own hour

Golden hour start12 pmin your audience’s time zone

Pick “Each platform at its golden hour” and Bluesky goes out at 12 pm where your audience lives, not where you are. It’s a starting point that adapts: once your posts have results, your own best hours take over.

What you can’t do on Bluesky, and why

Some limits are Bluesky’s, set in its official API; a few are Octoque’s own for now. Here they are, so nothing surprises you after you’ve scheduled.

  • Post more than 4 photos, or photos with a video. Bluesky takes up to 4 images, or one video, per post.[3]
  • Go past 300 characters. Bluesky’s post format allows 300.[2] Use a thread for more.
  • Change a post after it’s live. Bluesky doesn’t let apps edit posts. Octoque can delete it for you.
  • Send photos in DMs. Bluesky DMs from Octoque are text only.

Questions people ask

Why does Bluesky need an app password?

It’s how Bluesky lets other apps sign in without your main password. You make one for Octoque, and revoking it disconnects Octoque without touching your account.[1]

Does Octoque store my app password?

No. It’s passed straight to Bluesky to connect, and never stored or logged.

Can I post the same thread to X, Threads and Bluesky?

Yes. Write it once; each post shows a counter for every platform it goes to. Bluesky’s limit is 300 characters per post.

Can I reply to Bluesky comments in Octoque?

Yes, on paid plans. Comments and DMs from Bluesky show in the inbox with everything else.
