Send a DM to people who comment
Turn on Auto DM and anyone who comments a word like GUIDE on your Instagram or Facebook post gets your DM in seconds, with an optional reply under their comment.
Updated
Before you start
- An Instagram professional account (creator or business) or a Facebook Page, connected with permission for messages and comments. Accounts connected before 16 October 2026 need Sign in again once.
- The Creator or Studio plan, or the free trial.
Steps
- In New post, pick your Instagram or Facebook account. Under Platform settings, turn on Auto DM.
- Under When a comment says, type a word and press Enter (for example GUIDE). Leave it empty to answer every comment on the post.
- Write the DM. Tap First name to greet people by name. Put your link under Link button to send it as a button and count the clicks, or paste it into the message.
- Optional: a reply under their comment, like “Sent you a DM 👋”, so others know to comment too. Tap Add another reply for up to three; each comment gets one at random.
- Optional extras: Ask for their email first and Followers only (see below).
- Schedule or post as usual. The auto DM starts the moment the post is live.
What you’ll see
The preview beside the settings shows the comment, your reply and the whole conversation as the person sees it. After the post is live, its page shows how many comments were answered, DMs sent and read, and link clicks. Auto DM in the menu lists every one.
On a post that’s already live
Open the post and, under Auto DM, tap Add. It answers new comments from then on.
For every post on an account
Open Auto DM → For any post, pick the account, add at least one keyword and the DM. It answers that word on every post, old and new. A post with its own auto DM uses that one.
Collect emails
Turn on Ask for their email first. The person gets a short DM with a Send it button; when they tap it, Octoque asks for their email, checks it looks right (asking once more if not), then sends your message and link. The email is asked with a note that you may email them and they can unsubscribe.
Open the auto DM to see who gave their email, and tap Download CSV for the whole list. Octoque reads the list from Instagram or Facebook each time and doesn’t keep a copy. You decide how to use the emails, so follow the email rules where you and your audience live.
Followers only (Instagram)
People who don’t follow you get a DM asking them to follow first, with an I’m following button. When they tap it, Octoque checks and sends your message.
Replies to your stories (Instagram)
Open Auto DM → For story replies, pick the account and a keyword. When someone replies to any of your stories with that word, they get your DM.
When someone DMs the word
Turn on Also when someone DMs the word and people who send the keyword straight to your inbox get the same message.
Instagram’s and Facebook’s rules
- One DM per comment, sent within 7 days of it. Octoque sends each person one DM per auto DM, even if they comment twice.
- People who don’t follow you get it in their message requests. Links and buttons work.
- If they reply, you can chat with them in the Instagram or Facebook app as usual.
- TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn and Threads don’t let apps send DMs to people who comment.
Pause, edit or remove an auto DM any time from its post or from Auto DM. Octoque doesn’t keep the comments or names of the people who commented; the latest ones are read from Instagram or Facebook when you open it.
Troubleshooting
Instagram didn't allow messages when it was connected. Sign in to Instagram again on Accounts, allow messages and comments, then try again.
Open Accounts, tap Sign in again on the account and tick every permission, including messages. You don’t lose anything.
Auto DM didn’t start on Instagram
The post went out without it. The notification says why; fix that, then open the post and tap Add under Auto DM.
Some DMs “Didn’t go through”
Instagram and Facebook refuse a DM when the person’s privacy settings block messages, or the comment is more than 7 days old. Nothing to fix on your side.
