The short answer

One caption rarely fits everywhere: X allows 280 characters and Threads 500, while Instagram and TikTok allow 2,200 and LinkedIn 3,000. This tool keeps your words, cuts at the end of a sentence where it can, keeps your first link, and trims hashtags to each platform’s limit (five on Instagram, one topic on Threads). Limits checked 14 October 2026.

How to use it

  1. Paste your longest caption. Put hashtags at the end, the way you’d post them on Instagram.
  2. Choose what happens to hashtags, and untick any platform you don’t post to.
  3. Copy each version. A version marked “Fits as is” is your caption unchanged. The notes under the others say exactly what changed.

What it changes, in order

  1. Hashtags over the platform’s cap go first. Instagram keeps 5 (counting any inside your text), Threads keeps 1 because it uses one topic per post, YouTube up to 60.
  2. If it’s still too long, more hashtags go, from the end, until it fits.
  3. Then the text is shortened at the last full sentence that fits. If that would lose more than half the room, it cuts at a word and adds “…”. It never cuts a link or an emoji in half.
  4. Your link is kept. If the cut would remove your first link, the link moves to the end.
  5. YouTube gets a title from your first line (up to 100 characters), and any < or > is removed because YouTube doesn’t allow them.

It doesn’t rewrite your words or use AI. You get your own sentences, shorter. Read each version before you post: a cut can change the tone.

Worked examples

1. A Reel caption with seven hashtags

The caption is 401 characters. Instagram and TikTok take the words as they are; Instagram trims the hashtags to five. X and Threads need more:

Instagram: 374 of 2,200
Three edits that made my Reels easier to watch 🎬

1. Cut the first second. Start on the moment, not the walk-up.
2. Burn captions in: lots of people watch with the sound off.
3. End on a question so people have a reason to comment.

  • Kept 1 of 7 end hashtags (Threads allows 1).

2. A news post with a bare link

No hashtags, 367 characters, and the link at the very end. On X, the sentence cut would lose the link, so it moves to the end of the shorter version:

X: 277 of 280
Big news: our small bakery now ships across the UAE. Order by 6 pm and it leaves the same day. Every box is packed by hand, and every loaf is baked that morning. We started in a kitchen three years ago, and this is the step we have been working towards.

  • Kept the link by moving it to the end.
  • Shortened the text to fit 280.

3. A YouTube upload

The same Reel caption from example 1 gives this YouTube title, and the full caption fits the 5,000-byte description as it is:

The limits it uses

Caption limits, checked 14 October 2026
PlatformCaption limitCounted asBefore "more"Hashtags
Instagram2,200Meta's publishing API: "Maximum 2200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags."charactersabout 125Not documented by Instagram. About 125 characters is the commonly cited cutoff before "more"; it varies by screen and line breaks.5Instagram's @creators account said in December 2025 that captions are moving to a five-hashtag limit, rolled out gradually. Meta's API reference still says 30. Five is the safe number.
TikTok2,200Video posts: "The maximum length is 2200 in UTF-16 runes." Photo posts: title 90, description 4,000.charactersNot documentedNo set limit
YouTube5,000The description limit is 5,000 BYTES, not characters: emoji and many non-Latin letters take 2 to 4 bytes each. Angle brackets (< >) are not allowed.bytes (emoji and many non-Latin letters use 2‑4)Not documented60More than 60 hashtags and YouTube ignores all of them. Up to three show by the title.
inLinkedIn3,000"Posts can contain up to 3,000 characters."charactersabout 140Not documented by LinkedIn. Commonly cited as about 140 characters on phones and 210 on desktop; we use the phone number. No set limit
X280280 weighted characters for accounts without Premium. Premium accounts can post longer; Octoque keeps to 280.weighted characters (links 23, emoji 2)Not documentedNo set limit
Facebook63,206Meta's current docs give no number. 63,206 is the limit Facebook announced in 2011 and still the one most tools use.charactersNot documentedNo set limit
Threads500"Text posts are limited to 500 characters." Emoji count by their UTF-8 byte length, so one emoji can use up to 4.characters (each emoji counts its byte length)Not documented1One topic tag per post (the first valid one counts), up to 50 characters, no periods or ampersands. Up to 5 links per post.
Each number links to the page it comes from. Where the platforms don't publish a number, we say so.

Questions people ask

Does it use AI to rewrite my caption?

No. It only shortens: it keeps your sentences in order and cuts at the best place. If you want different wording for a platform, Octoque’s composer gives each platform its own tab to edit.

Why only five hashtags for Instagram?

Instagram said in December 2025 that it is moving every caption to a five-hashtag limit. Its developer docs still say 30, so the safe number is five.

Why does Threads keep only one hashtag?

Threads uses one topic tag per post: the first valid one. Extra ones don’t become tags.

Will it break my link?

No. Links are never cut. If shortening would lose your first link, it is moved to the end of the shorter version.

Is my caption stored?

No. It runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
