- X223 / 280 characters57 leftCounts weighted characters (links 23, emoji 2)
X counts in weighted characters: most Latin letters, numbers and punctuation count 1; emoji, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count 2; every link counts 23 however long it is. Text is normalised (NFC) first.
- Facebook231 / 63,206 characters62,975 leftCounts characters
- Threads233 / 500 characters267 leftCounts characters (each emoji counts its byte length)6 hashtags (Threads uses one as the topic)
Only the first hashtag (#reels) becomes the post's topic; the rest stay as plain text.
Up to 100 characters, no < or >. The caption above becomes the description (5,000 bytes).
Everything stays in your browser. Posting the same video everywhere? Fit this caption to every platform or schedule it in Octoque.
The caption limits are: Instagram 2,200, TikTok 2,200, YouTube description 5,000 bytes (title 100), LinkedIn 3,000, X 280, Facebook 63,206 and Threads 500. On X every link counts as 23 and every emoji as 2. Instagram now allows five hashtags per post. Checked 14 October 2026.
How to use it
- Paste your caption. Write it for the platform with the most room, usually Instagram or LinkedIn.
- Read the seven rows. Each row counts the text the way that app does and shows what’s left. Red means it won’t post.
- Fix the red rows. Shorten by hand, or let the caption fitter make a version for each platform.
If you post to YouTube, type the title in its own box: it has a separate 100-character limit.
Worked examples
1. A long link. “New video on why I stopped posting at 9 am: https://www.example.com/blog/2026/10/why-i-stopped-posting-at-nine-in-the-morning” is 125 characters. Instagram counts all 125. X counts it as 67, because X shortens every link to 23 characters however long it is.
2. Japanese and emoji. “新しい動画です 🎬🔥” looks like 10 characters (counting the space). X counts it as 19: each Japanese character and each emoji counts 2. Threads counts it as 16, because Threads counts each emoji by its byte length (4 for most). YouTube’s description limit is in bytes, so it uses 30 of the 5,000.
3. A normal caption. A 300-character caption fits Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook and Threads. On X it counts 300 of 280, so it is 20 too long. That is where most cross-posting goes wrong.
The limits, platform by platform
Every number links to the platform’s own page. Where a platform doesn’t publish a number, the table says so instead of guessing.
| Platform | Caption limit | Counted as | Before "more" | Hashtags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2,200Meta's publishing API: "Maximum 2200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags." | characters | about 125Not documented by Instagram. About 125 characters is the commonly cited cutoff before "more"; it varies by screen and line breaks. | 5Instagram's @creators account said in December 2025 that captions are moving to a five-hashtag limit, rolled out gradually. Meta's API reference still says 30. Five is the safe number. | |
| TikTok | 2,200Video posts: "The maximum length is 2200 in UTF-16 runes." Photo posts: title 90, description 4,000. | characters | Not documented | No set limit |
| YouTube | 5,000The description limit is 5,000 BYTES, not characters: emoji and many non-Latin letters take 2 to 4 bytes each. Angle brackets (< >) are not allowed. | bytes (emoji and many non-Latin letters use 2‑4) | Not documented | 60More than 60 hashtags and YouTube ignores all of them. Up to three show by the title. |
| 3,000"Posts can contain up to 3,000 characters." | characters | about 140Not documented by LinkedIn. Commonly cited as about 140 characters on phones and 210 on desktop; we use the phone number. | No set limit | |
| X | 280280 weighted characters for accounts without Premium. Premium accounts can post longer; Octoque keeps to 280. | weighted characters (links 23, emoji 2) | Not documented | No set limit |
| 63,206Meta's current docs give no number. 63,206 is the limit Facebook announced in 2011 and still the one most tools use. | characters | Not documented | No set limit | |
| Threads | 500"Text posts are limited to 500 characters." Emoji count by their UTF-8 byte length, so one emoji can use up to 4. | characters (each emoji counts its byte length) | Not documented | 1One topic tag per post (the first valid one counts), up to 50 characters, no periods or ampersands. Up to 5 links per post. |
| Field | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube title | 100 charactersAngle brackets (< >) are not allowed. | Required. Shown in search and under the video. |
| YouTube description | 5,000 bytesThe description limit is 5,000 BYTES, not characters: emoji and many non-Latin letters take 2 to 4 bytes each. Angle brackets (< >) are not allowed. | Your caption goes here. |
| TikTok photo title | 90 characters | Photo posts only; the description can be 4,000. |
When a platform doesn’t say how it counts, the counter uses the stricter way (UTF-16 code units, where most emoji count as 2). That way a caption that fits here also fits there. Octoque’s own composer uses the same limits.
How X counts characters
X counts in weighted characters, using its open-source twitter-text rules. Text is normalised first (so “é” typed two ways counts the same). Then:
- Latin letters, numbers, spaces and most punctuation count 1.
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, and most other scripts, count 2.
- Every emoji counts 2, even ones built from several pieces like a family or a flag.
- Every link counts 23, short or long.
The limit is 280 weighted characters for accounts without Premium. Premium accounts can post longer, but most people reading on phones still see the first few lines.
| Text | Looks like | X counts |
|---|---|---|
| hello | 5 | 5 |
| café | 4 | 4 |
| 👍🏽 | 1 | 2 |
| 日本 | 2 | 4 |
| octoque.com | 11 | 23 |
What people see before “more”
Long captions are cut off in the feed with a “more” link. No platform publishes the exact point, and it moves with screen size and line breaks. Commonly cited figures are about 125 characters on Instagram and about 140 on LinkedIn on a phone. The counter shows you that much, so you can check your first line works on its own.
Questions people ask
What is the character limit on each platform?
Instagram 2,200, TikTok 2,200, YouTube 5,000 bytes for the description and 100 characters for the title, LinkedIn 3,000, X 280 (without Premium), Facebook 63,206 and Threads 500.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes, on every platform. A line break counts as one character.
Do hashtags and @mentions count?
Yes, the # and @ count too. Instagram also limits hashtags: it is moving from 30 to 5 per post. YouTube ignores all hashtags if a video has more than 60.
Why does X say my post is too long when it looks short?
Emoji and many non-Latin letters count 2 on X, and every link counts 23. A short post with three emoji and a link uses 29 of your 280 on those alone.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. The counting runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to Octoque or anyone else.
How often are the limits checked?
We check every number against the platforms’ own pages at least every three months. The date at the top of each table shows the last check.
