Video size checker for Reels, TikTok and Shorts

Pick a video and see, platform by platform, if its shape, size, length and file size will post. Then see what each app's buttons and captions cover. Your video stays on your device.

Commonly used guides, not official numbers: the real overlay moves with caption length and phone.

Everything runs in your browser. Octoque checks this for you on every upload and lets you pick the part to keep when a video is too long. Try it free.

The short answer

For Reels, TikTok and Shorts, export 1080×1920 (9:16) as MP4 with H.264. Keep Shorts to 3 minutes, Instagram Stories to 60 seconds and Facebook Reels to 90 seconds; Instagram Reels files must be under 300 MB. Keep faces and text out of the top 14% and bottom 35% of the frame. Checked 14 October 2026.

How to use it

  1. Pick a video from your phone or computer, or drop it on the box. Nothing uploads: your browser reads it where it is.
  2. Read the platform check. Each platform and format gets a result: Ready, Works with a note, or Needs a change, with the reason.
  3. Check the safe zones. Choose an app to shade the parts its name, caption and buttons cover. Move the slider to check other moments, and download the overlay to use in your editor.

For MP4 and MOV files the checker also reads the frame rate and codec from the file itself. WebM files don’t store a frame rate the same way, so for those it isn’t checked.

Worked examples

These are three common files run through the same rules the checker uses.

A phone video, 1080×1920, 45 seconds, 60 MB

The usual vertical phone export. It is the right shape for every short-video feed.

A cut-down from a long YouTube video.

Instagram ReelsNeeds a change400 MB is over the 300 MB limit. Shape 16:9 is accepted, but 9:16 fills the screen. 4:00 min fits Instagram, but Octoque posts up to 3:00 min there: you'd pick the part to keep.

YouTube ShortsNeeds a change16:9 is horizontal: YouTube posts it as a regular video, not a Short. 4:00 min is longer than 3:00 min. In Octoque you'd pick the first or last 3:00 min to keep.

The pattern: export vertical 1080×1920, keep it under 90 seconds if you want it everywhere, and pick one moment for platforms with shorter limits.

The video rules, platform by platform

Every number links to the platform’s own documentation. The last column is what Octoque posts today: when a video is longer, the app asks you to keep the first or last part for that platform, and leaves the others whole.

Safe zones: what the app covers

On vertical video the app draws your name, caption, sound and buttons on top of your video. Text or faces under them are hard to see. No platform publishes official pixel numbers for normal posts, so the checker uses the guides most editors use, taken from each platform’s ad templates:

Areas covered by each app on a 1080×1920 frame (commonly used, not official)
AppTopBottomLeft / rightButton columnFrom
Instagram Reels269 px672 px65 / 65 px227 px wide, from 1152 px downGuide
Instagram Stories269 px672 px65 / 65 px–Guide
TikTok Video240 px660 px120 / 120 px300 px wide, from 840 px downGuide
YouTube Shorts288 px672 px48 / 192 px–Guide
Facebook Reels269 px672 px65 / 65 px227 px wide, from 1152 px downGuide
No platform publishes official pixel safe zones for normal posts. These come from ad-placement templates and move with caption length and phone size, so leave a little extra room.

The safest area is roughly the middle of the frame, a little left of centre. If your video goes to all three apps, keep anything important between about 290 px from the top and 680 px from the bottom of a 1080×1920 frame.

Your file stays with you

The checker opens your video with your browser’s own player, reads its width, height and length, reads the frame rate and codec from the file’s header, and draws one frame onto the page. The file is not uploaded to Octoque or anyone else, and it is gone when you close the tab. That is also why it works with big 4K files: nothing has to travel.

Questions people ask

What size should a Reel, TikTok or Short be?

1080×1920 pixels, 9:16, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. All three accept that file as it is.

How long can a YouTube Short be?

Up to 3 minutes, if the video is square or vertical. Horizontal videos are never Shorts.

How long can an Instagram Reel be?

Meta’s publishing API accepts Reels from 3 seconds to 15 minutes and up to 300 MB. Octoque posts up to 3 minutes and lets you pick the part to keep.

Why does it say my 4K video is too wide for Instagram?

Meta’s publishing API lists a maximum width of 1,920 pixels for Reels, Stories and Threads videos. Export at 1080×1920 to be safe.

Does it check frame rate?

Yes, for MP4 and MOV files: it reads the frame rate from the file. Instagram, Threads and TikTok accept 23 to 60 fps, Facebook Reels 24 to 60, X up to 60. WebM files don’t say, so they aren’t checked.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is read by your browser on your device and never sent anywhere.
