Best time to post on Instagram in 2026: what four big studies agree on

The four biggest Instagram studies don’t agree on one magic hour. Where they overlap is weekday afternoons into early evening, roughly 3 PM to 7 PM in your audience’s local time, Monday to Wednesday. Here is each study side by side, and how to find your own hour.

By Kumar Gaurav, founder of OctoqueUpdated Facts checked

The short answer
  • Safest window: Monday to Wednesday, about 3 PM to 7 PM local time. Three of the four post-data studies name part of Tuesday 3–6 PM.
  • Best single slots in the largest study: Thursday 9 AM, Wednesday 12 PM and Wednesday 6 PM (Buffer, 9.6 million posts).[1]
  • Weakest: Saturday, and 1–5 AM on any day (Buffer); Sprout calls weekends the lowest overall.[1][2]
  • The outlier: Later’s 2024 data found 3–6 AM posts did best.[4] Nobody else found that.

These are averages across other accounts. Your own Most active times chart beats all of them.

What each study found

Every row is a separate published study, read and checked on the date in the byline. Times are the local time of the accounts in each study unless the time-zone column says otherwise.

Where the studies agree

Three of the four post-data studies (Buffer, Sprout and Hootsuite) point to the same broad shape: weekday afternoons and early evenings beat weekends. The heatmap below counts how many of them name each hour.

  • Tuesday afternoon is the clearest overlap: Buffer (3 PM and 5 PM), Sprout (1–7 PM) and Hootsuite (3–7 PM).[1][2][3]
  • Monday and Wednesday late afternoon to evening also get two votes each: Monday 6–8 PM from Buffer and Hootsuite, Wednesday 12 PM and 5–6 PM from Sprout with Buffer or Hootsuite.
  • Weekends are weaker in both studies that rank days: Buffer puts Friday and Saturday lowest, Sprout says Saturday and Sunday “yield the lowest engagement overall”.[1][2]

Named by the most studies (3 of 4): Tuesday 3 PM; Tuesday 5 PM.

This shows agreement between published studies, not engagement. Each study counts once per hour it names; the windows come from the “What each study found” table. A brighter cell means more studies agree, not that more people are online.

Where they disagree, and why

Mornings. Buffer’s best single slot is Thursday 9 AM and Later’s is 5 AM, while HubSpot’s marketers call 6–9 AM “the one universal dead zone on the platform”.[1][4][5] Three reasons they can all be right about their own data:

  • Different metrics. Buffer divides engagement by followers and uses the median. Later reports engagement rate without a formula. Sprout and Hootsuite don’t say. HubSpot asked people. A metric that rewards few competing posts (early morning) can favour hours a reach metric wouldn’t.
  • Different years. Later’s data is January to October 2024; Sprout’s is three winter months, November 2025 to February 2026; Buffer’s spans two full years. Instagram changes how it ranks posts over time, so older data can drift.
  • Different accounts. Each study only sees its own customers, and each tool attracts a different mix of brands, small businesses and creators. Your audience may look like none of them.

Best day. Buffer says Wednesday, Sprout Tuesday and Wednesday, Hootsuite Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, Later Monday, HubSpot’s survey Friday. The spread is a hint that the day matters less than the hour and the post itself.

Day by day

What each study says for each day, in your audience’s local time. Studies with nothing for a day are left out.

Best time to post on Instagram on Monday

  • Buffer: 7 PM, 6 PM, 8 PM (rated moderate)
  • Sprout Social: 2–4 PM
  • Hootsuite: 3–9 PM
  • Later: 5 AM (11 PM also strong)
  • HubSpot (survey): 9 AM–12 PM (48% of marketers)

Best time to post on Instagram on Tuesday

  • Buffer: 7 PM, 3 PM, 5 PM (high)
  • Sprout Social: 1–7 PM
  • Hootsuite: 5–8 AM and 3–7 PM
  • Later: 5 AM
  • HubSpot (survey): 9 AM–12 PM (52%)

Tuesday has the most agreement of any day: three post-data studies name part of 3–6 PM.

Best time to post on Instagram on Wednesday

  • Buffer: 12 PM, 6 PM, 8 AM (highest)
  • Sprout Social: 12–9 PM, plus 11 PM
  • Hootsuite: 5 PM
  • Later: 3 AM, strong until 5 AM
  • HubSpot (survey): 9 AM–12 PM (51%)

Buffer rates Wednesday its best day overall and Sprout gives it the longest window (12–9 PM).

Best time to post on Instagram on Thursday

  • Buffer: 9 AM, 8 AM, 7 AM (highest)
  • Sprout Social: 12–2 PM
  • Hootsuite: 4–5 PM
  • Later: 4–5 AM
  • HubSpot (survey): 3–6 PM (41%)

Buffer’s single best slot of the week is Thursday 9 AM, but Sprout and Hootsuite put Thursday’s peak in the afternoon.

Best time to post on Instagram on Friday

  • Buffer: 10 PM, 9 PM, 6 AM (low)
  • Sprout Social: No significant peak; avoid 3–7 AM
  • Hootsuite: Around 4 PM
  • Later: 3–6 AM
  • HubSpot (survey): 12–3 PM (37%)

Friday is weak in both Buffer and Sprout. Only HubSpot’s survey calls it the best day.

Best time to post on Instagram on Saturday

  • Buffer: 9 PM, 10 PM, 8 PM (low)
  • Sprout Social: Lowest engagement of the week; no peak given
  • Hootsuite: 11 AM and around 5 PM
  • Later: 5 AM
  • HubSpot (survey): 12–3 PM (44%)

Saturday is the weakest day for Buffer, Sprout and Later.

Best time to post on Instagram on Sunday

  • Buffer: 9 PM, 10 PM, 8 PM (moderate)
  • Sprout Social: One of the worst days; no peak given
  • Hootsuite: 12–3 PM
  • Later: 12 AM, 5 AM and 11 PM
  • HubSpot (survey): 6–9 PM (44%)

Sunday evenings are rated moderate by Buffer; Sprout counts Sunday among the worst days.

Worst times to post on Instagram

  • 1–5 AM on any day (Buffer).[1] Later found the opposite in 2024; see above.
  • Saturday (Buffer, Sprout and Later all rank it lowest or among the lowest).[1][2][4]
  • Before 8 AM and after 10 PM (Hootsuite’s FAQ), though its own Tuesday window starts at 5 AM.[3]
  • 6–9 AM and 9 PM–12 AM in HubSpot’s survey of marketers.[5]

By format

Only Later splits its data by format.[4] Its Reels came out best at 12 AM with Monday the best day, and carousels at 5 AM on Tuesday. Buffer says it looked “at all post types together rather than splitting the numbers out by format”, and Sprout says the algorithm “prioritizes user activity times over content format”.[1][2]

So there is no solid study-backed reason to post Reels and carousels at different hours. Stories timing advice on these pages is not from post data.

Your audience is different: find your own golden hour

Every study above averages thousands of accounts. Your followers live in their own time zones and keep their own routines, so treat the windows as a first guess and check your own numbers.

In Instagram’s own analytics

  1. Switch to a professional account (Creator or Business) if you haven’t. The audience report needs at least 100 followers.[6]
  2. On your profile, open Professional dashboard, then Insights.
  3. Open Total followers and scroll to Most active times. Switch between Hours and Days.
  4. Note the two or three highest hours. Instagram says this shows the “times they’re most active on Instagram”; that is when your followers are on the app, not when they engage, so test around it.[6]

With Octoque

Octoque’s starting hour for Instagram is 19:00 in your audience’s local time.

19:00 sits inside the evening windows Buffer gives for Monday and Tuesday and inside Hootsuite’s Monday 3–9 PM and Sprout’s Wednesday 12–9 PM. It is a starting point, not a measurement of your audience.

Tell Octoque where your audience lives (up to three regions) and that hour follows their clock, not yours. Once you have a few posts, your own results take over from the starting hour. You can always pick a time yourself, post right away, or add the post to your queue. See how golden hour works.

How we put this together

Studies: Buffer, Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Later, the four largest published Instagram studies with post data, plus HubSpot’s survey for context. Each page was read on 14 October 2026; links are in the sources.

Counting consensus: for each study we marked every day-hour it names as a best time (a range like “2–4 PM” marks the 2 PM and 3 PM hours). The heatmap shows how many studies mark each hour. HubSpot is left out because it measures opinion, not posts.

Limits: the studies use different metrics, years and customer bases, and Sprout and Hootsuite pool several networks without giving an Instagram-only sample. None of this is Octoque data; Octoque has not published audience data of its own yet.

Questions people ask

What is the best time to post on Instagram in 2026?

There is no single hour every study agrees on. The overlap is Monday to Wednesday, about 3 PM to 7 PM in your audience’s local time. Buffer’s biggest dataset ranks Thursday 9 AM, Wednesday 12 PM and Wednesday 6 PM highest.

What is the best day to post on Instagram?

Wednesday in Buffer’s data, Tuesday and Wednesday in Sprout’s. Later says Monday and a survey of marketers by HubSpot says Friday, so treat the day as a tie-breaker, not a rule.

Is it bad to post on Instagram at night?

Buffer finds 1–5 AM weakest, but its evening slots (6–10 PM) are strong on most days. Later’s 2024 data even favoured 3–6 AM. Late evening is fine if your followers are awake.

Do Reels have a different best time?

Only Later splits it out (Reels best at 12 AM, Monday). Buffer and Sprout don’t split by format, and Sprout says activity time matters more than format.

Which time zone do these times use?

Your audience’s local time. All four post-data studies normalise to local time. If your followers live elsewhere, convert with the best time calculator.

How often should I post on Instagram?

Buffer suggests 3–5 feed posts a week plus 1–2 Stories a day, from a separate 2025 study it cites. Consistency matters more than the exact number.
