Best time to post YouTube Shorts in 2026: four studies compared
Shorts behave differently from long YouTube videos, and only a handful of studies measure them separately. The four that do point to late afternoon and evening, roughly 4–9 PM in your audience’s local time, with Friday and Saturday around 4 PM as the most agreed slots. YouTube itself says publish time matters less than you think. Here is all of it in one place.
By Kumar Gaurav, founder of OctoqueUpdated Facts checked
- Best window: late afternoon into evening, about 4–9 PM local time. Buffer puts the Shorts peak at 6–11 PM.[1]
- Most agreed hours: Friday 4 PM and Saturday 4 PM, each named by three of the four studies.
- Top slots in the biggest dataset: Friday 4 PM, Friday 6 PM and Friday 7 PM (Buffer, 1.8 million YouTube videos including Shorts).[1]
- YouTube’s own view: “Don’t overthink your publish time”. Timing can help early views, but YouTube has not seen it change long-term viewership.[6]
Shorts are shown again for weeks, so a good hook beats a perfect hour. Still, start in the window and check your own audience chart.
What each study found
Every row is a separate published study, read and checked on the date in the byline. Times are the local time of the accounts in each study unless the time-zone column says otherwise.

Where the studies agree
The four performance studies agree that Shorts do better later in the day than long-form videos. SocialPilot puts it bluntly: long-form and Shorts “now have almost completely opposite optimal posting windows”.[2]

Named by the most studies (3 of 4): Friday 4 PM; Saturday 4 PM.
Where they disagree, and why
Friday. Buffer calls Friday the best Shorts day and SocialPilot agrees; Adobe ranks Friday among the worst.[1][2][3] Adobe’s sample is small (280 creators) and skewed toward hugely popular channels, with averages that a few viral Shorts can pull up. Buffer uses medians across a much bigger, more ordinary set of accounts.
Mornings. SocialPilot lists morning options (7–11 AM) on several days; Buffer’s Shorts picks are almost all after 4 PM, and Adobe found the busiest upload hours (8–10 AM) did worse than off-peak hours.[2][1][3] Posting when everyone else posts means more competition.
Time zones. Buffer and SocialPilot give local times. Adobe and Metricool don’t say, so their hours may be in one zone. vidIQ’s upload chart is in US Eastern time.[5]
How much it matters. YouTube’s help centre says “publish time is not known to impact a video’s long-term performance” and that the system aims to recommend videos “regardless of when that video was uploaded”.[7] Buffer says the same for Shorts: they are “continuously resurfaced”, so timing is “less make-or-break”.[1]
Day by day
Each study’s Shorts picks for each day, in local time where stated.
Best time to post on YouTube Shorts on Monday
- Buffer (Shorts): 8 PM, 5 PM, 6 PM
- SocialPilot (Shorts): 7 AM or 12 PM
- Metricool (Shorts): 2–6 PM
Buffer ranks Monday among the two weakest Shorts days.
Best time to post on YouTube Shorts on Tuesday
- Buffer (Shorts): 8 PM, 9 PM, 7 PM
- SocialPilot (Shorts): 7–11 AM or 5–7 PM
- Adobe Express: Best day for average likes and views (no hour given)
- Metricool (Shorts): 2–6 PM
Tuesday is weak in Buffer’s data but Adobe’s best day for average likes and views: the clearest clash between the studies.
Best time to post on YouTube Shorts on Wednesday
- Buffer (Shorts): 7 PM, 8 PM, 9 PM
- SocialPilot (Shorts): 12 PM or 3–6 PM
- Adobe Express: A standout in many niches (no hour given)
- Metricool (Shorts): 2–6 PM
Best time to post on YouTube Shorts on Thursday
- Buffer (Shorts): 7 PM, 8 PM, 9 PM
- SocialPilot (Shorts): 7–11 PM
- Metricool (Shorts): 2–6 PM
Thursday evening (7–9 PM) is named by both Buffer and SocialPilot.
Best time to post on YouTube Shorts on Friday
- Buffer (Shorts): 4 PM, 6 PM, 7 PM (best day)
- SocialPilot (Shorts): 7–9 AM or 11 AM–1 PM; its summary calls Friday 4–7 PM the strongest Shorts window
- Adobe Express: Among the worst days
- Metricool (Shorts): 2–6 PM
Friday 4 PM is one of the two most agreed hours.
Best time to post on YouTube Shorts on Saturday
- Buffer (Shorts): 7 PM, 11 AM, 6 PM
- SocialPilot (Shorts): 9–10 AM or 3–6 PM
- Adobe Express: 4 PM, the top slot
- Metricool (Shorts): 2–6 PM
Saturday 4 PM is the other.
Best time to post on YouTube Shorts on Sunday
- Buffer (Shorts): 7 PM, 8 PM, 5 PM
- SocialPilot (Shorts): 10–11 AM or 3–5 PM
- Metricool (Shorts): 2–6 PM
SocialPilot sees Shorts engagement “dips significantly Sunday after 8 PM”, while Buffer lists Sunday 7–8 PM.[2]
Worst times to post on YouTube Shorts
- 12–5 PM on most days, except late Friday afternoon (Buffer).[1]
- 3–7 AM (SocialPilot).[2]
- Monday and Tuesday (Buffer); Friday and Monday (Adobe).[1][3]
- 8–10 AM, the busiest upload hours, did worse than off-peak hours in Adobe’s data.[3]
By format
Shorts and long videos have different windows in every study that splits them. Buffer: Shorts peak 6–11 PM, long-form Sunday mornings. SocialPilot: Shorts later in the day, long-form 2–4 PM on weekdays. Metricool: Shorts 2–6 PM, long-form 10 AM–4 PM.[1][2][4] See the long-form YouTube guide for those.
On length, Adobe found Shorts of 40 seconds or longer were 33% more engaging than shorter ones in its sample.[3]
What YouTube itself says about timing
YouTube’s help centre answers this directly: “Publish time is not known to impact a video’s long-term performance.” It adds that timing does matter for Live streams and Premieres.[7]
Its page on the recommendation system has a section titled “Don’t overthink your publish time”: publishing when your audience is most active “might lead to more immediate views”, but YouTube hasn’t seen evidence “it affects long-term viewership”.[6]
So the study windows help the first few hours. After that, the Short is judged on whether people keep watching.
Your audience is different: find your own golden hour
Every study above averages thousands of accounts. Your followers live in their own time zones and keep their own routines, so treat the windows as a first guess and check your own numbers.
In YouTube Shorts’s own analytics
- Open YouTube Studio, choose Analytics in the left menu, then Audience at the top.[8]
- Find the card When your viewers are on YouTube. It shows when your viewers were on YouTube (anywhere, not just on your channel) in the last 28 days.[8]
- Pick the darkest bars and post 1–2 hours before them, so the Short is ready when they arrive.
- Small channels may see little or no data in that card; then start from the study window above and compare views after 48 hours.
With Octoque
Octoque’s starting hour for YouTube Shorts is 18:00 in your audience’s local time.
That is 6 PM. It sits at the start of Buffer’s 6–11 PM peak and inside SocialPilot’s Friday 4–7 PM.
Tell Octoque where your audience lives (up to three regions) and that hour follows their clock, not yours. Once you have a few posts, your own results take over from the starting hour. You can always pick a time yourself, post right away, or add the post to your queue. See how golden hour works.
Studies: every Shorts study with a stated sample we could find: Buffer and SocialPilot (both split Shorts from long-form), Adobe Express (Shorts only) and Metricool (Shorts window only). vidIQ is shown for context. Sprout Social and Hootsuite publish no YouTube study (Hootsuite’s YouTube page returned an error when we checked). Pages read on 14 October 2026.
Counting consensus: each study marks the hours it names for each day (a range like “3–6 PM” marks 3, 4 and 5 PM; Metricool’s 2–6 PM applies to every day because it gives no days). The heatmap counts how many studies mark each hour.
Limits: none of the four states the period of its uploads; only Buffer and SocialPilot state local time; Buffer doesn’t say how many of its 1.8 million videos were Shorts. None of this is Octoque data.
Questions people ask
What is the best time to post YouTube Shorts?
Late afternoon to evening in your audience’s local time, about 4–9 PM. Friday 4 PM and Saturday 4 PM are named by three of the four studies.
What is the best day to post Shorts?
Friday for Buffer and SocialPilot, Tuesday for Adobe. The day matters less than the hour, and both matter less than the first two seconds of the Short.
Should Shorts and long videos go out at the same time?
No. Every study that splits them finds Shorts do better later in the day. Long videos lean towards mornings and early afternoons.
Does upload time affect Shorts views?
It can help the first hours. YouTube says it has not seen publish time affect long-term viewership, and Shorts keep being shown long after upload.
Which time zone do these use?
Buffer and SocialPilot use local time; Adobe and Metricool don’t say. Use your audience’s local time, and convert with the best time calculator.
